Chapter Eleven

Cooperative Societies

The Co-operative sector is a major contributor to the economy of Kenya. 50 percent of the population is either directly or indirectly involved in co-operative activities. Massive corruption and liberalization of the economy has inflicted heavy losses and affected the growth of cooperative societies.

FORD-KENYA will undertake to inject further growth of cooperatives by:

1. Implementing the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act to deal with graft in the sector

2. Amalgamate and enroll all cooperative enterprises at the Nairobi Stock Exchange to broaden the capital base for credit to members

3. Strengthen the running of all co-operative societies through capacity building programmes and professional management

4. Strengthen primary production

5. Exempt dividends from taxation

6. Streamline the Cooperative Bank to support cooperative ventures in the rural areas
